PROBLEM:

a cam will dwell for 55 degrees, then rotate through 55 degrees moving a follower CCW through an angle of 20 degrees, then pause there for 145 degrees and rotate the follower CW back to the starting position while the cam is rotating through 75 degrees.

Timing Chart:

The timing chart for the motion above will look like this:

A Barrel Cam with an Oscillating Follower will allow a larger angle swing of the follower with a smaller cam than a Plate Cam. To show how to design this type cam we will use the following Kinematics shown below.  You can watch a video of this input here.  NOTE: The video was done with previous version of Cam Designer SE, with slightly different data and forms.

1.  In the Geometry Form select Brl from Cam Type, and Oscillating Oscillating-Roller from Followers and select Groove (Box) from Face or Groove and the Geometry Form will look like this:

Set default groove width of rib thickness

This button will place a default width of groove or thickness of rib in the edit box.

Choose computed position of follower

These selections will place the follower pivot in the quadrant chosen and the plane the arm swings in, either horizontal, or vertical

This makes the cam symmetrical

This button will cause a groove or rib to be placed on the cylinder so that it is symmetrical.

This Cam Picture looks very complicated and it is.  Cam Designer SE makes is easy to determine all of these data items.

Some of the items that will be known are:

1.  How much the arm has to swing, which is already given in the Kinematics.  With that, the follower diameter, and the amount of material left at each edge of the cam, you can determine the width of the cam.

2.  If it is desired to get an accurate estimate of the stress on the cam, or torque/power needed to move the cam, the inertia of the follower system will need to be determined.  See the tutorial for the Plate Cam Oscillating Follower for an explanation for how this can be determined.

see the video Barrel Oscillator for the input of this cam.
